Windows Vista - Configurating updates: stage 3 of 3 stuck in endless reboot loop

Asked By Stacey Johnson on 06-Apr-11 02:12 PM
Was wondering if anybody has ran into this problem? Last night after windows vista ultimate ran automatic updates the system rebooted and now is stuck in an endless reboot loop.  When the on-screen status message showing “Configuring updates: Stage 3 of 3 – 0% complete”, the system will suddenly going into shutdown and reboot. Worse still, after computer starts up again, it will comes to the same configuration screen, and goes into reboot again. The computer restarts error repeated itself again and again, causing endless reboot loop. The symptom also happens when boot into Safe Mode.

Was hoping somebody ran into this and had a fix other than doing a complete reformat.

Thanks

Take a look at this it offers you 2 possible resolutions:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949358

and to preven it from happening again make sure to obtain and install update 937287 from the Microsoft Download Center separately from all other updates on the Windows Update site. Install the update that applies to your version of Windows Vista so that you can successfully install future updates.

The following files are available for download from the Microsoft Download Center:

Probrably should have mentioned that I have tried everything in other forums. The whole boot from CD, Safe mode (can't be done because that just loops back also), editing the pending.xml file, nothing seems to work.
Was really hoping that somebody here has ran into this problem and could tell me how they fixed it.

Thanks

So you are saying that starting it in safe mode and doing a system restore to an earlier time didn't work?

If you tried booting into safe mode and pressing F8 before the Windows logo appears but it didn't respond or rebooted itself then you can just contact them so they can help you resolve the issue:

Yes, I am unable to boot in safe mode because all it does is loop back to rebooting.
I did contact Microsoft about this and there explanation was what you orginally posted, which was no success to me.

Thanks for your help and hopefully somebody that came across this will have encountered the same situation and was able to resolve it.
