Windows 7 - Windows Update fails with code 800727278

Asked By Jack Rnl on 31-Jul-11 12:23 PM
Earn up to 30 extra points for answering this tough question.
I have 2 PC's attached by ethernet cables to a hub that has been attached to a Zyxel modem.
One of the PC's is running XP (32) and windows update works.
The other PC (a new X64 Asus laptop) is running Windows 7 and windows update does not work (internet is accessible from that PC).

Most of the time I get errorcode 80072F78, sometimes 80072EFE

I've been reading and trying a lot of things found on the internet, but nothing helps.

Below I added the WindowsUpdate.Log report generated
Questions:
a) What is actually causing the problem?
b) what needs to be done to overcome THAT problem?
c) how can I make Windows Update working?

Error 0x80072F78 - Invalid Server Response this is typically due to proxy.

Try the following:

Check connection settings:

Open Internet Explorer > Select Tools > Internet Options > Connections > LAN Settings

Check or uncheck the "Automatically Detect Settings" option.

Apply changes, exit Internet Explorer then try Windows Update again.

The 0x80072F78 error typically is caused by proxy or firewall blocking issues.

Do you have port 443 enabled?

Can we try bypassing the proxy server to eliminate that possibility?

Are you using a firewall?

Are you blocking Active X controls?

The following are critical sites for Windows Update, please ensure they are trustedn & easily accessible from your computer.

You can also go to a library and download all the updates manually from download.microsoft.com, burn them to a CD or copy to a flash drive and install them.

You can also download service packs from the website I gave you.

Hope this helps. .

  1. Click Start, click Run, type https://www.microsoft.com:443, and then click OK.
  2. If you cannot connect to s.microsoft.com, or you receive an error message, the port may be blocked.

Jack Rnl replied to Jitendra Faye on 01-Aug-11 01:06 PM

First let me thank everybody for their comments, these are really appreciated.

I already tried quite a number of the solutions provided BEFORE posting here, but nevertheless : I tried them once more and spend my day on it. But unfortunally without success.

Some things I noticed:
a) Windows Defender DOES update its data

b) Emule shows TCP test fails

c) Bitcomet statistics : Listen Port of TCP : 24123 (Blocked by Firewall/router)
Listen Port of UDP: 24123 (Opened in Firewall/Router)
UPnP NAT port mapping : Failed [UPnP device not found!]
(BTW I ran with Windows Firewall "off" and Windows Defender "off" as well)

d) I cannot access http://www.microsoft.com from within IE9, but I can while using Firefox
also : accessing http://www.update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/vistadefault.aspx?ln=en-us from IE9 takes rather long (longer compared to Firefox) or does not show up at all. (BTW I only installed en-us)
But accessing http://www.update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/vistadefault.aspx?ln=en-uk from IE9 is quite fast.
Browsing for windowsupdate.microsoft.com from IE9 will show http://test.update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/vistadefault.aspx while from Firefox it will show up.

e) Microsoft Fix it Center has downloaded troubleshooters.
Trying to fix Windows Update did not work but it showed Windows Update HAS been working, installed some updates and failed updating afterwards. (I split the 2 CONSEQUETIVE runs of Windows Update)

********** End of NOT working Windows Update Log  (BTW : a different Error code , but  80072ee7 is also in the log)

f) As 'Installed Updates' shows just 4 items (KB976902, IE9, Silverlight 4.0.60531.0 and Office 2010 SP1) I wanted to uninstall KB976902. But that was not possible. As Office 2010 SP1 was the first instellaed after july 27th I uninstalled that one (no success), so I reinstalled it. Running Microsoft Fix it Center again now showed 2 repairs:
"One or more Windows Update components are configured incorrectly" and "Change Windows Update locations to Windows default settings". Both have been fixed (automatically).

After that Windows Update still does NOT work

To me it looks the problem are
a) some microsoft sites (en-us) are not accessible
b) my windows-7 PC looks shielded for TCP

I have a Zyxel Prestige 2602H-63 router and I installed LAN-driver (for X64 windows-7) provided by ASUS on a disk. I never need (nor can) to login at my ISP.
I tried to add 443 at "NAT - Edit SUA/NAT Server Set" of the modem:
Start Port No : 443
End Port No: 443
Port Translation : 0  and  0   (is this correct??  I also used 443 and 443)
IP address : 192.168.1.42      (static IP of my PC)

but no success

What's next??
