i want to show data location & department wise.  so i create a first parent group on location and then create a second parent group on department. my report is running fine. i just need to know when one should go for creating child group. how child group works and how it is different from parent group. please describe in what kind of situation one should create child group and how to create it. please discuss in detail with sample scenario. thanks

Create Child group only when an entity is completely dependent on some other entity.
In you example there are 2 entities :
1. Location
2. Department

If location and department are separate entities, then create parent group for both.
If department is completely dependent on Location, then create location as parent group and department as child group

You should use the Parent/Child groups only when one or more of your fields of one table depend on one or more of the fields of other table.
And also those fields are either foreign keys or primary keys in some of the tables used. This will be mostly used when creating a dimension in a Cube. For more information on this and some examples refer to the below link,

http://www.mssqltips.com/sqlservertip/1939/working-with-a-parent-child-hierarchy-in-sql-server-reporting-services-ssrs/

This should help you in clearing the confusion of Parent/Child groups as well as in understanding on how and when to use the Parent group and Child Group hierarchies.
