I would suggest you to go on following way

1) get the basic overview on .net technology and how it works..
2) get the knowledge on basic asp.net control
3) get overview and undrstanding of looping statement (if, for, foreach, case etc...)
4) then after one by one go and learn the concept like master page, user control, css, theme , skins  etc...
5) After that you can learn the database connectivity.
6) develop few database related application

by doing in this way you will get more clear idea on .net

First of all choose the language from vb.net or C# because programming part is done with these two languages.

i advice C#. Then first learn the C# develop some application. use the controls and develop one project to get idea how much you have learnt the C#

then go for asp.net for web development, where in mark up you have html controls and the asp.net server controls, javascript and at code behind you will use the vb.net/C# whichever you have chosen.

Choose best learning books or best way is learning through videos.

hope this info will help you !
