Microsoft has invested an f'ing ton of money into this.  I believe they see the "cloud" being important in the long run as a way of sharing data between devices as you switch from device to device.  A few years ago, that wasn't as common.  Technology is changing and our appliances, TVs, DVRs, phones, tablets, pcs, servers, and who knows what else are slowly becoming places where people desire to have access to all their information.

So, I would say that yes this is probably worth your time.  If you can get (or keep) a job where you are writing real world production apps in the "cloud", you are better off going in that direction.

On a side note...  Think "games" and you can start to imagine all sorts possibilities.  Training devices and scenarios too.  Especially for the military.

If you ask 1,000 Microsoft developers if they have developed a cloud app (not just Azure), I think you might be disappointed at the low response. I have developed cloud apps (mostly using cloud services for database- related functionality), and I'm still quite frightened by what happens when the cloud goes down. This has happened to Microsoft, Amazon, and others.

if you're looking for work as a developer in the US, I would recommend focus on the core Microsoft suite:

ASP.NET / MVC 3 (and 4)
SQL Server
WCF
Entity Framework (or NHibernate)
Windows Forms
