Microsoft Word - in word 2007 with XP how do I add names to a list for mail merge recipients?

I have a list previously created in word and now I need to add names but the edit button is not highlighted. Help!

Click on “Edit recipient list.” Then, at “Mail Merge Recipient List” window under Data Source (lower left window) click on the data source and then click the “Edit” button to edit your list.
