Hope this tip saves time for others who are looking for the battery icon in Windows 7.
Click on the up-Arrow in the taskbar. and choose "Customize". From the window that appears, choose the "Turn System Icons on or off".
From the new window that appears, choose "On" for the Power system Icon.
It will now display in your system tray.
