Windows Vista - Error opening installation log file

Hi there,

I just upgrade from XP to Vista Home Premium and noticed that MSXML 4.0 SP2 KB936181 was not installed; so I downloaded from MS site and at run option, I received a window named "Windows Installer" with the legend "Error opening installation log file.  Verify that the specified log file exists and is writeable".

Could someone give solution to this? 

If you are still working on this --- you need to right-click on the executable and choose "Run As Administrator".  That gives it necessary permissions to write the log file.

Please let me know if you solved the original problem (KB936181 not installed).  I found your thread because I have exactly the same issue.  In my case, the manual installation of KB036181 didn't work either, failing with a strange error: "An error occured during the installation of assembly component {7B298060-1128-B7E8-A06B-D6B9ABF34537} HRESULT 0x8007054F".  I searched the registry, and that component string has something to do with the MSXML 4, but other that that I haven't been able to figure out what to do next, and have been all over the net today trying to get to the bottom of it, but so far no luck.  Will be interested to hear if you got any further than me.

Hi Bob, with your comment I already fix the problem.  Let me explain what I did.

1.- execute from

http://download.microsoft.com/download/9/6/5/9657c01e-107f-409c-baac-7d249561629c/msxml.msi

 

the MSMXL 4.0

2.- then proceed to execute the update, from

http://download.microsoft.com/download/9/4/2/9422e6b6-08ee-49cb-9f05-6c6ee755389e/msxml4-KB936181-enu.exe

 

in here I must open the DOS window as administrator.

 

I do not have any additional issues with this.

 

Just one more question, why I must open the DOS as admin to have a successful result?, when is it need it to do this?

delete msxml4.dll from windows\system32.  Downlaod and install update from Microsoft.  MS XML 4 will reinstall.  Hope this helps
