I have another friend whose PC crashed and she lost all her photographs and songs and playlists, but they're all safely in her iPod. Unfortunately, the newly restored PC failed to detect her iPod as a hard drive at all (even though it was previously enabled), so she could not even transfer the files out safely. Anyone has any ideas as to how she could do it?
Thanks in advance...

Firstly you can reinstall the OS and iTunes 10.Then you pulg your ipod in,and see whether iTunes identify the device, and try to transfer your ipod stuffs to computer.
Besides, you also consider a program like Cucusoft iPad/iPhone/iPod to Computer Transfer to transfer music from ipod back to your computer (unless the music is purchased in which case itunes can transfer those ones back). Cucusoft is a paid program I think but there are quite a few free ones.So you can try out its trail version for backup.
