IIS - How to turn on SSI on Windows 7 - Asked By John on 19-Jan-11 10:58 PM

How can I make server side includes work on my Windows 7 Professional machine?

I cannot seem to enable Server Side Includes in ISS on Windows 7 Professional.
I have turned on all the Application Development Features under the Internet Information Services menu in the Control Panel.  I have also started ISS and enabled the handlers for *.shtml.

The following two files are used as test files and they work when uploaded to my web hosting server.
They do not work on my local Windows 7 machine.

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN">
<html><head>
  <title>use include file</title>
  </head><body>
<!--#echo var="DATE_LOCAL" -->
<!--#include virtual="testincludefile.shtml" --><br>
<br>
</body></html>

This is the contents of the file testincludefile.shtml<br>

Make sure you install the SSI component and enable the module. If it doesn't seem to work, reinstall it again, and make surethe ISAPI Extension Component is also installed. Check in %windir%\IIS7.log to make sure that the install handlers executed successfully.

Enable Server Side Includes for IIS7

Control Panel > Programs and Features > Turn Windows Features On or Off to add the component

Now open IIS7 and in features view go to Handler Mappings

Under actions select "Add Module Mapping"

Enter the following information:

Request Path: *.html
Module: ServerSideIncludeModule
Executable: blank
Name: SSI-html
