Windows 7 - USB PENDRIVE Problem - Asked By Deepak K on 05-Aug-11 11:34 AM

I had purchased a hp v220w pendrive 6 months back,
recently i am not able to connect it.
when i connect it it shows a hidden drive named " XXXXXXXX U167CONTROLLER USB Device" .
i am not able to access the contents, not able to format it, not able to rename it etc.
is there any way of accessing or formatting it?

Right click Computer > Manage > and under Storage click on Disk Management you will find the drive listed and the botton just right-click this and follow the step you need like, format or rename

You can format or change attribute of pen drive using command prompt:

Open a dos prompt (Start >> Run >> cmd) and type:
attrib -r -h -s ./s x:\*.*

@Ravinder : that disk is not available in disk managemant.  .. the disk is only and only available in device manager in control panel but i cannot rename it there, nor can i format..

This may seem "why do I need to do this", sometimes changing the USB port to a faster port or slower port on the computer system helps.

If the drive is currently plugged in on the front then move to back and vice versa.

@Riley: it is not the problem with USB controllers, i think it is the problem with the pendrive. so there was no use uninstalling the USB controllers.   not working.

@ravinder : yes,  i tried in all USB ports . still problem persists. maybe a very powerful virus.. what do u say? i have got very imp documents in pendrive.. it'll be good if i could somehow get them back.

Maybe mate; You can try a tool call DBAN and download the Ultimate Boot CD ISO burn that to CD-ROM and boot the PC from that CD. This is a linux based system and you maybe able to get to the drive that way and get your documents out.

@ dipa : wen i type the first command in cmd , it says " path not found", wen i type the second command for formatting, it says "cannot open volume for direct access"...
i also have ubuntu, please let me know if i can do something there..

Ok let me tell you this command by specifying its description:

i am not able to navigate to the drive containing the usb drive in cmd... it says "device is not ready"...but when i plug in the pendrive, it installs and says device is ready to use..
is there any solution?

Hallo, surprisingly i have the exact same problem but with a LaCie CooKey 8 GB that I bought about a month ago. I have tried the HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool without success and all of the the other sugestions. So if anyone can help it would be great.

thanks jonathan urescue is really help fpr this problem but still lost the data inside the pendrive...

everyone, use urescue like jonathan said to format the pen drive then use software getdataback to get ur loosing file after formatting...

Thanks a ton dear.. I was having this problem since 1 and half year and i was not able to use my three HP pendrives because of it... Now they are working fine.. Though the data is lost but it was not usable either.. thanks again.. U saved my 3000 bucks..

I got same problem with my pendrive. I downloaded Urescue and it worked.
My pendrive is ok now. but all the data is lost in witch there were some immportan datas,
is there any way to recovere it????????????/
