SQL Server - Unable to install SQL server 2005 SP3

Asked By Vikrant on 23-Sep-11 04:05 AM

Hi Reena,
Thanks for the resolution. The issue is resolved.
However, I am now unable to upgrade the SQL server 2005 SP3. When i try to upgrade the SP3, during the install i get the message :-
"The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is
unavailable"
It asks for SQLRun_sql.msi and by default the path specified in windows installer is C:\Temp\SQL2005STD\CD1\ which is not present any more.
I uploaded the files on the server, and gave the path C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\Binn\, but the install failed soon after with the error :- KB 955706 failed.

I checked the log files and following are some of the important observations :

it seems cached msp for SP2 is missing.

1. Download SQL Server 2005 SP2 (ignore if already downlaoded) and extract* it at a folder say D:\SQLSP2
2. Now copy the file D:\SQLSP2\hotfixsql\files\sqlrun_sql.msp and paste it at C:\WIndowsInstaller.
3. Next,rename file sqlrun_sql.msp at C:\Windows\Installer to 1a1cfb.msp .
4. Start installation of whichever hotfix/Cumulative Update you want to install. It should succeed.

or
15b2af.msp is missing from the Installer folder i.e. C:\WINDOWS\Installer\ , if so you need  to copy sqlrun_dts.msp from extracted folder of SP2 i.e. ...\hotfixdts\files\sqlrun_dts.msp and paste it to C:\Windows\Installer . Further rename this file to 15b2af.msp . Now you can try installing the hotfix

Unable to install SQL server 2005 SP3 - Vikrant replied to Anoop S on 13-Dec-11 01:30 AM

I would like to thank you Anup. Your suggestion worked perfectly in this case. I followed the steps mentioned and SQL server 2005 SP3 was installed successfully. What i did is just a bit different than what you suggested, but the overall idea was same.
1) I checked the log files of the sercvies which failed to install, ie. Database services, Integration sercvices, Client Components etc ,and noted  the corresponding msp and msi files which were missing and the source where the installer was looking to copy the  msi files from.
2) I then copied the msi files from the source and pasted in C:\Windows\Installer\ and renamed it in accordance with missing msi files mentioned in the logs
3) I also downloaded SQL server SP2 and extracted the files in C:\SP2 folder, copied the corresponding missing msp files, pasted it in C:\windows\Instsaller\ and renamed it in accordance with missing msi files mentioned in the logs.
4) I ran the install which went successfully.
Please add any information which might be useful. Your post was excellent in resolving the issue.
Thanks once again.
