How to install your SSL Digital Certificate

SSL Certificates will be available for download when validation and processing are complete. (The SSL
certificate itself is a text file; it is encrypted data that your web server will be able to understand when installed as a digital certificate.)

Before you begin the installation, make a back-up of your certificate that you can keep in a safe place. This makes re-securing your server much easier if your server crashes.

MS recommends that you get the certificate from the certificate server. This means that you have to have an access to Window 2000 or Windows 2003 server with “Certification Services” installed.

You use IIS MMC to generate request to this server. Then using browser you submit this request to the server. Then, when somebody at that server approves the request, you will get back a certificate.

Before we get started, SSL stands for Secure Socket(s) Layer. SSL has two main purposes:
  • Contrary to popular urban legend, the primary purpose of a SSL certificate is to provide you (the "user" if you will) with non-forgeable proof of the identity of the website you are connecting to.

  • The secondary purpose is to ensure the data exchanged between your browser and the site you are connecting to cannot be read, deciphered or decrypted by a third party who may be tapping in to the data exchange between your Browser and the remote server

1.) Purchase a certificate from your favorite vendor ( Verisign, Thawte, even GoDaddy sells them).
2) Follow the instructions to install on your particular web server.
3) Modify your pages and / or site to run under SSL (port 443).
