I have just changed from Word 2003 to Word 2010 and am trying to insert sequential numbering to the first column of a table. In the first cell of the column I insert  Field, select the Seq field and enter something after  SEQ in the Field Codes and click OK. I select the cell and copy it to the clipboard .  I move the cursor until a down pointing arrow  appears above the column but cannot click to select just the column,  when I click the whole table is selected.  This is really driving me mad, the process worked fine in the past so can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong?

Try this instead.

Select the entire first colum or the colum you want to number.
Then go to the Home Tab on word 2010 and then look for numbering tab like this one I have circled.


Click the drop down arrow and hover over the different styles until you find the one you want.
Done.

I would do exactly what Don said and have used this successfully before.

Yes that worked great and thanks for the information.

I was trying to do this as I had done previously in Word 2003. I think you had to enter something in the field dialogue box and then go back to the column click and paste , not really sure of the entire operation but as far as I can remember it was very convoluted, this works fine.
