Windows Server - RDWeb working locally, but not externally.

Asked By Randy Paul on 12-Feb-12 05:06 AM
Server 2k8 with RDS and IIS roles installed successfully launches a Remote Desktop session with a remote computer on the same network using either RDC client or remote app from RDWeb site. Externally, no go. Router ports 443 and 3389 forwarded to server. Please help. what am I missing?

hi,

Please go on troubleshooting it via the following steps:

1.   From extranet environment, use Remote Desktop Connection to access the RD Session Host directly. Please note to add the Gateway server name into the following location:

Remote Desktop Connection – Options – Advanced tab – Connection from anywhere – Settings – Use these RD Gateway server settings <input the FQDN name of RD Gateway>

If it succeeds, it means there is something wrong in configuring RemoteApp for extranet environment. If it failed, go to Step 2.

2.   Check the firewall configuration or anti-virus software on the server side. Especially, the firewall for Public Network or other Internet accessing network may block the Port 3389. If possible, please temporarily disable the firewall for all networks and test the issue again.

Hope will helps!!!!!!!

Thanks,

Thanks for the response. Sorry it didn't work. I made the settings change you described. the FQDN is "slserver1.slpools.local". The error I get says "Your computer can't connect to the remote computer because the Remote Desktop Gateway server address is unreachable or incorrect. Type a valid Remote Desktop Gateway server address."

The router is configured to forward port 3389 to the IP address of the server.

What else can I check?

You need to setup the RD Gateway role on that server, then in RD Web Access set the "DefaultTSGateway" variable for the external address.

See this Microsoft article:

I also wrote an article on how to do this with multiple ISPs:
