Windows 7 - Getting Server Busy message - Asked By Frank Hartshorne on 28-Feb-12 06:00 PM

Running Windows 7 64 bit OS. When I try to start a scan I get the Server Busy message telling me to switch to the busy program. I have tried this immediately after a reboot with no other program running and still get the message. Any idea why, or what I am missing. Note that this is a new PC and on the old PC running Windows 7 32 bit I did not have the problem.

Frank I have a Dell V310 and I too sometimes get the same busy message when I try to start a scan, using the software.
What I do if I really need to scan something before I shut everything down is I use the Scan button on the scanner to select or start the scan.  this seems to work for me.

After I get my work done I will shut both the computer and the printer/scanner down and bring them back up. this has worked for me once or twice in the past.  If it is a continues problem you may have to actually delete the printer / reboot computer / reinstall printer.  (dont forget to set it as defualt again after a reinstall)

Hope this helps Don

Thanks Don, but this occurs with a stand  alone scanner. Even after the Server Busy appears, the scanner will go ahead and do the initial scan, but I can not get back to do the actual scan.

what is the brand of scanner and did it come with its own software, or are you allowing WIN7 to install the drivers for it based on plug and play

You might try to locate drivers from the brand name website, download them and then delete and reinstall the scanner.

If you have already done this, then post the brand name of the scanner and let the folks from the forum help you search for support on the web.

Hi Frank,

1. Does it happen with all the programs?
2. Have you made any recent changes on the computer?
3. Which program are you referring as “WP” too?

It sounds like you have installed programs configured to access the internet and perform an operation, such as check for updates for that program. The 'server busy' message is appearing because the program is trying to access the internet before the connection is completely ready.

To check which program is trying to update using the internet I would suggest that you perform clean boot procedure and check.
To help troubleshoot error messages and other issues, you can start Windows Vista by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This kind of startup is known as a "clean boot." A clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts.

Refer the below link to know more about clean boot procedure.
How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

Reset the computer to start as usual
After you have finished troubleshooting, follow these steps to reset the computer to start as usual:
1. Click Start, type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
2. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.
3. On the General tab, click the Normal Startup option, and then click OK.
4. When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Restart.

Also check if you get similar error message when opening any windows program like Windows media center.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the suggestion, but I feel the problem is within LView Pro itself. I hooked the scanner to a laptop running Windows 7 64 bit that did not have other scanner drivers installed and got the same result. When I go to a Windows 7 32 bit machine with ALL the drivers installed, LView works fine for scanning.

Frank,

LViewPro I used to use that it is an awesome view program and will open just about anything on the fly.
LViewPro 2005 is a 32-bit version
LViewPro 2006 has a 64-bit version and you can download the free trial version here

Donald, this morning I tried to do the scan on a PC that had NO scanner drivers or software installed. The only thing the same was the OS was Windows 7 64 bit. I have pretty well determined that the problem is the way that LView Pro works in Windows 7 64 bit. As long as I do not attempt to do a scan LView Pro works fine. Also, I have another PC running Windows 7 32 bit and it has the same scanner drivers and programs installed as does the 64 bit system and it runs perfectly. The software has not been updated for several years, so I am pretty sure the problem is in the combination of an older program and Windows 64 bit OS. Thanks for your help though.

The problem shows up ONLY when I try to do a scan using LView Pro. This software has not been updated for several years and I have pretty well decided the problem is with how the software is communicating with the Windows 7 64 bit OS. When I run the same program on a PC that has Windows 7 62 bit OS everything, including scanning, runs fine. I have other software that I can do scanning with so no big deal. Just frustrating is all. And, by the way, I had already tried all the suggestions you made. Thanks anyway for responding.
