Windows 7 - location of email messages - Asked By Dick A. Wilcox on 31-Mar-12 12:33 PM

Are email messages stored on my local hard drive?  If do, how do I locate those messages?  Can I extract a message and forward it?  I am using Windows 7/64 on an eMachine computer.  Please contact me for any other necessary data on my equipment oar whatever.

Hi,

If u wnt to store email to ur hard disk, u need to archive ur email.

In case of lotus notes, then u need to create a nsf file to archive, u can store this file wherever u want

In case of MS outlook, there is a option archive, where u need to create folder & drag and drop emmail to folder to store in hard drive.

Here is link to set the location of an archive .pst file in outlook

That depends on your version of Windows Live Mail.

In Windows Live Mail 2011, click the dark blue tab to the upper-left corner. Select Options, then Mail.In earlier versions, and in the current XP version, press and release the ALT key to bring up the menus, and select Tools, then Options.

Once you're in the dialog box, click the Advanced tab, then the Maintenance button. Click the Store Folder button. A little dialog box will come up with the path.

If you're using Vista or Windows 7, that path is probably C:\Users\yourlogon\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail, where yourlogon is the name you use to log onto Windows. Note that the AppData folder is hidden; you won't see it in Windows Explorer, although you can still get to it by typing the path.

XP users will probably find the path at C:\Documents and Settings\yourlogon\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail.

Many thanks.  It didn't work exactly as you said, but after I went to Folders and changed hidden files, I was able to my regular computer search.  I have not yet extracted a file to forward.  I get to that soon.  Thanks again.

Dick,

Are you using MS Outlook?   I am assuming this is a home machine and not a work machine.
If you are going to the web to get your mail meaning you are logging into gmail or hotmail or another webbased mail client then you might not find your message on your machine as most of the time they are stored on the web server.
If you are using pop/smtp account and are accessing your mail using outlook there is a good chance you dont have a roaming profile (being a home machine) and that you are downloading your mail from the sever to your hard drive and have been.  Outlook saves your messages in a *.PST file and all your contacts in a *.PAB do some reasearch on the location of the PST file.  also look up where outlook archives messages you have setting that tell outlook how often to archive and where to store them.  you may have to import that archives folder to see these older messages.
