I created a subfolder in outlook express. The name of the subfolder is personal, though I know the main folder is titled personal folders. I went to transfer an e-mail yesterday. The name personal came up on my list of folders to transfer to, but when I clicked it I was told "file unavailable" or something like that. After that the folder personal never came up again. I've tried different searches but I cannot find it anywhere.

If the properties of the folder shows the moved folder inside that top folder, but its not visible in normal mode, then you can it in two ways

Is that a pst file? Remove and reconnect the pst.

Is that a ost file,? check whether you are able to see that folder in OWA. or reconfigure the outlook profile.

Locate the ost-file for your mail profile and rename it to .old when Outlook is closed. Upon starting Outlook, the cache will be rebuilt again; check the folder showing now.

You can also try to remov and re-add the email account and check if it helps.

I am having trouble replying to you as my message doesn't seem to be going through. I went to the main file, personal folders and under properties I brought up all the folders and subfolders. The 1 I am looking for, personal was not there.-Cathy

If you can't find it that way either, you might have accidentally deleted it and you'll have to restore it from backup.

If the issue is caused by a corruption in the pst-file, then you could try scanning it for errors withhttp://www.msoutlook.info/question/77.
This might recover the folder hierarchy and its contents.

I read the answer about the pst. files. I downloaded outlook tools. There is a place to run a scan, pst. When I click on this it asks what file I want to scan? What do I tell it? Obviously I'm not highly technical. Thank you-Cathy

If that folder is hard deleted (Shift+Delete) than you won't be able to recover it using Recover Delete Items.
Is that the case in your situation?

Notes
The new DumpsterControl value functions even if the DumpsterAlwaysOn value does not exist or is not configured.
Even though the Recover Deleted Items menu is available for folders in a .pst file, you cannot recover deleted items from a .pst file because the "Dumpster" is an Exchange feature.
