Windows 7 - Why can't I burn dvd's in windows dvd maker?

Why can't I burn dvd's in windows dvd maker? I'm running windows 7 pro x64 and each failed attempt returns 'unable to burn the dvd'. I can burn dvd's in other programs but not windows dvd maker, which I prefer to use. How can I fix this problem.
