ASP.NET - Application pool for multiple web sites?

when do we go for linking a single app pool for multiple web sites ? what is the use of app pool? when already we have the app domain as a shield for web apps inside the web site?

web site---web app1(app domain 1),web app2(app domain 2),web app3(app domain 3),web app4(app domain 4)

GC has the instance of each web app

I have 2 different websites and i am confused whether to have 2 app pools or one?

One for each site is the recommended configuration.
